Can What We Eat Give Us Chronic Pain?

Every day in my office I see patients with all kinds of pain issues, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Migraine Headaches just to name a few. These conditions frequently respond well to chiropractic, nutritional supplementation, energy healing, herbal therapy care. One of the most overlooked and underrated components to pain is the types of food we put into our mouth.

If pain is still an issue

If pain is still an issue even if one has gone through courses of chiropractic, supplementation, energy healing, and acupuncture. It is time to address foods that cause systemic inflammation in the body. Certain types of food have been linked to an increase in inflammation in the body. One of the mechanisms of inflammation is linked to an imbalance in the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 essential fatty acids. Essential Fatty Acids are building blocks to compounds in the body such as prostaglandins and eicosinoids. Their role is to modulate the inflammatory process in the body. It is well known that all disease processes have a common factor, inflammation. Foods high in omega 3′s such as fish oil, flax seeds, hemp seeds, have been shown to cause a decrease in the inflammatory process in the body. Conversely, many foods that we eat on daily basis cause more inflammation leading to chronic pain because of an increase in omega 6 fatty acids. The major culprit is grains. There I have said it! Can’t you just hear the old line dietitians and nutritionists screaming? The fact is, grains in the form of wheat, rye, oats, barley and corn contain higher levels of omega 6 fatty acids. Hence, more pain and inflammation. This includes the breads, pastas, cereals, crackers, pastries; everything that most Americans eat on a daily basis.

I frequently have all my chronic pain sufferers eliminate grains from their diet. Yes, most of them are kicking and screaming along the way. But, if they stick to the program, their pain decreases immensely or disappears all together.

Most people are so accustomed to their grains

due to their upbringing and cultural indoctrinations, they never stop to think that the foods they have been putting into their bodies could be causing most if not all their health problems.

So, if you are suffering from chronic pain, for three weeks, eliminate wheat, rye, oats, barley and corn. See how you feel.

It could just change your life for the better.

If you are not already embracing social media, it's definitely time to take a hard look at the benefits of using it to promote your station or broadcast.

Value of Social Media and Radio Stations

If you are not already embracing social media, it’s definitely time to take a hard look at the benefits of using it to promote your station or broadcast. Why? Because everyone else is doing it and it’s proven to increase listener loyalty and expand market reach. Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn really lend themselves well to this end of the entertainment industry.

The great thing about creating and using social media sites to help promote your station is that they are free.

All it requires is a little time and a pretty small learning curve, as all three are pretty easy to use. Hey, if I can do it, you can do it. But you know what? You really need a staff member (or time for you to put on another hat) that knows and understands your business from the kitchen out. This is important, because there are things going on in real-time that you will want to promote, and the only way to do that in a timely and cost-efficient manner is to designate an in-house staff member with the task of creating and maintaining your social media sites.

If you haven’t already done so, Facebook lets you create a Page that everyone can add to their ‘Like’ category and now you have a rolling wall of news posts, going out in real-time to all of your Facebook “likers”. All you need to do is update your page anytime, anyplace . . . using a desktop, iPhone or laptop, and you are cranking! With a Facebook Page, you are now gaining more credibility as a broadcaster because you are keeping up with the ‘new media,’ which, in order to not stagnate in the market, you really need to do. This is the first and easiest step into social media.

Twitter is a whole other beast in the way that it works; it’s more like a news service that lets you send out little blurbs and rants with links, but you are limited by 140 characters. Twitter is great for DJs, artists, entertainers and luminaries that naturally create followings, and it can work well for radio too. Twitter is a great way to keep your listeners and followers informed of events, special shows, remotes, etc. Twitter is also used by a lot of stations nowadays for sending your playlist information directly to a page you set up for that express purpose. You can use certain streaming services to send the artist, song and album info, along with the album art, directly to your Twitter page to create a real-time branded playlist.

YouTube is another great tool for radio stations and broadcasters. You can take all your videos from events, remotes, concerts, interviews, station hi-jinks and more, upload them to YouTube, and embed them just about anywhere on the planet, in particular, right on your Facebook wall or Tweet them all to your Twitter followers. YouTube is a great way to add more variety by introducing video performances and interviews to traditional radio listeners that are now following you on the internet. This really broadens your scope and reach, and keeps your listeners paying attention to you longer than they will your competitor operating without social media.

And lastly, LinkedIn is more of a corporate executive and sales professional networking platform, but is great for building profiles and establishing credibility. Like Facebook, it allows you to build a profile and promote yourself and your business interests. Key station personnel and management can easily build a LinkedIn profile, link it to the station’s Twitter and Facebook pages, create a larger presence, let people see the ‘inside’ of your business, and get a better overall impression of you as a broadcaster.

The more people know about you and your business as a radio station owner or broadcaster, the more familiar they become and familiarity in radio creates loyalty. But, just like everything else in life, you have to spend the time and put in the hours to build and maintain your social media profiles. But in today’s age of trends and fads, it’s certainly one you need to be a part of in order to fairly compete!

Don’t let your competition pass you by.

Embrace and use social media. It’s there to help you if you use it properly, and by following these few simple little guidelines, it can definitely make a difference!

Reduce Their Risk of Relapse

We can clearly see that individuals who discharge from our treatment program and continue to participate in aftercare are most likely to reduce their risk of relapse in the early part of recovery. There are many reasons for this.

Developing and Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

The continuation of the bonding process which formed during the treatment experience provides a strong feeling of well being and support which gives the individual an ongoing sense of belonging with and to a group of people who are committed to developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Any recovering addict or alcoholic will tell you that in recovery “you are not alone” and the truth of that statement becomes one of the most important aspects of the entire recovery process.

Aftercare Programs

By nature , addicts and alcoholics are isolators and the more they are willing to stretch themselves to participate in theraputic groups with other recovering people the more likley they will be to remain sober. Of course we would expect that these same people would be attending and participating in 12 step recovery groups such as AA and NA however, the aftercare programs provided by the treatment center offers such individuals a very safe environment in which to talk about personal issues which they may not feel comfortable discussing in 12 step meetings.

All in all, there is no question but that an individuals continued willingness to “go to any length” to stay sober will serve them well in recovery especially in early recovery when new recovery skills are being learned.

Carol Harblin (CHHC)

What’s good for breakfast?

Do you know what really works with your body?

Sometimes people just eat and drink what other people generally do because they want to fit in with them. But is that really the right thing to do for your body?

You want to find the breakfast that will give your body the most efficiency throughout the morning. You don’t want to crash mid-morning.

Let’s try a breakfast experiment. Each day this week, try a new breakfast. One morning have a carb breakfast, next morning try eggs, the next morning try oatmeal, and the next morning try coffee and a muffin. After each breakfast, stay attuned to your body and how it feels.

Everyone’s body functions differently:

We all have our own unique chemistry. For one person, eating a bagel and cream cheese is a great breakfast, whereas another person may find that cereal is best. Another person may find that eating some sort of meat energizes them too.

So, what works for you?

For me, my body’s favorite breakfast is granola cereal with almond milk. It holds me all morning and it gives me a constant energy without crashing.

The breakfast may change periodically because we are ever-changing beings. Three months later, there may be something else that may work better.

It’s important to always stay attuned to your body. Keep in touch with your feelings and your energy.

Hmmm…What’s for breakfast???
